Welcome to WLFN, Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor, George Warr

Help us in welcoming to the WLFN team, Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor, George Warr.

Originally from the UK, George has been living in the Williams Lake area for about 15 years, working closely with Indigenous communities in the field of mental health and wellness. He has a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and has completed training in Indigenous-Focusing-Oriented Therapy and Complex Trauma.

George was instrumental in the development of Foundry Cariboo Chilcotin — Williams Lake’s youth drop-in centre providing mental health and substance-use support, physical and sexual healthcare, peer support, and social services. He has also worked with Tsilhqot’in National Government, and the Carrier Chilcotin Tribal Council.

Whenever possible, George strives to go beyond the classical forms of mental health counselling like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Rather than always keeping clients cooped up in a stuffy office, he looks for opportunities to spend time with community members on the land, and engage with traditional Cultural practices like Tsqilye ceremony and the harvesting of medicinal plants. George is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). EMDR provides long-term relief by targeting the unprocessed memories that feed unhelpful and negative symptoms, without asking clients to rehash their trauma experiences.

As WLFN Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor, George will primarily work with adults and young-adults over 12, addressing issues like trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, domestic violence, substance misuse, and with those impacted by residential schools.

Outside of work, you can find George spending time in the outdoors with his family, or cruising around on his chopped 1989 Shovelhead Harley motorcycle.

Stop by the Cwelcwélt Health Station for a chat, or call Shemica to book an appointment: 250.296.3532.

Le7 te stskitsc, welcome, George!
